The Outdoor Academy has an immediate opening for a temporary, one-semester leave replacement United States history teaching position. OA’s US History curriculum focuses on our interaction with, feelings about, and impact on the natural world (and its impact on our political, economic, and social systems) and how those relationships between humans and nature have changed over the course of the nation’s history. This is a discussion-based course with outdoor and experiential education components, and the history teacher collaborates with the English and science teachers to offer a weekly team-taught, field based course with an interdisciplinary focus on the environment, sustainability, and sense of place.

In addition to teaching duties, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to play a part in the school’s residential life as a back-up dorm parent, serve as an advisor, and/or participate in the school’s outdoor expedition, crafts, and/or character education programs. These duties will be determined in coordination with the Director of The Outdoor Academy based on the candidate’s skills and interests.

The Outdoor Academy is an accredited, residential, semester school for tenth and eleventh-grade students. Rising from a long tradition of experiential education at Eagle’s Nest Foundation, a non-profit organization chartered in 1950, The Outdoor Academy infuses its honors-level college preparatory curriculum with environmental education, outdoor adventures, character and leadership development, and unique arts offerings in a small community setting. Established in 1995, The Outdoor Academy enrolls up to 28 students from across the United States each semester to attend our school located in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina. The mission of the school is “Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.” The school is built around its four cornerstones of Intellect, Environment, Craft, and Community.
