Eagle’s Nest Foundation Helene Storm Updates

Updated 10-8-2024

Power and internet have been restored to Eagle’s Nest Foundation campus.  Our on-site staff remains limited if there is a slight delay in returning your phone call or email messages.

Campus cleanup of downed trees and damage continues.

Updated 10-2-2024

We are so grateful for the support we have received in the wake of Hurricane Helene. We are relieved to report that all students, faculty, and staff are safe. We experienced flooding on the lower half of the camp, which has resulted in some damage. Many trees across campus also came down, one clipped the corner of Cabin 1. Amazingly, no other buildings were damaged. These are all things that we’ll be able to repair and clean up. Kyle, our Maintenance Director, has already spent hours on his tractor repairing our roads.

The Semester 59 students have been nothing short of amazing! Together with residents and faculty, they have triaged their food to prioritize consuming perishables, spent hours clearing debris and small limbs, and worked with staff to manage the generator keeping the well pump running for fresh water and the freezers in their safe temperature range.

Crews from Duke Power are working on Everett Road as of 10/2 and we are being told that partial power to campus may be restored as early as this afternoon. Phones and the internet will follow. That timeline is unknown. The best way to connect with us by phone is to call our Winston-Salem office at 336-761-1040. Otherwise, we are now able to receive emails in remote offices around campus and Brevard.

While we have sustained some setbacks, we feel incredibly fortunate. The surrounding counties in Western North Carolina have been devastated. Our hearts have been with our Eagle’s Nest and Outdoor Academy families who have been deeply affected by Helene.

How You Can Help

Many of you have been asking how you can help. We have a lot of cleaning up ahead of us! We will let you know if we have a “work camp” that you can help with. In the meantime, you can support Eagle’s Nest and The Outdoor Academy directly by registering for camp, sharing that applications are currently being accepted for The Outdoor Academy, or making a donation to our annual fund (see below for these links).

To support the people of Western North Carolina as they work to recover from Helene, here are a few organizations providing relief and support to the affected areas:

If you were planning to apply for camp by September 30th, but were not able to because of the storm, please contact Molly or Paige so we can help.

We will continue to provide updates as we work towards recovery and appreciate your support and concern during this time. Together, we will rebuild and help our region recover from this event.
